About Us
What We Do
Over the centuries, Salons were grounds for revolutionary ideas and cultural innovation– allowing an open exchange among free thinkers without fear of repercussion. Almost exclusively held in private homes, Salons fostered dialogues and discourse too bold for the public sphere.
However, despite its legacy, the meaning has been somewhat lost since the Age of Enlightenment. Today, if asked, most young adults would say a Salon is where you get your hair cut. Yet, when referring to a place of relaxation, connection, and candid discussion, the private home is still thought of– more specifically, the living room sofa.
The Salon of Fine Arts brings the writers, artists, and philosophers out of competitive classrooms and back to the SoFA, where students in Tallahassee can engage in the same enlightened thinking as their predecessors.
Why We Do it
There is an undeniable yet unspoken problem within numerous collegiate Fine Art programs: lack of community.
Rather than unifying to maximize potential creative expressions and achievements, students are vying for the gold all on their own. Outside of the classrooms, where rules of decorum interfere with the collective ardor, students and faculty have no place to collaborate. My personal goal is to develop a community to bridge the gap among student artists by creating a space where innovative creatives do not just scrape by but thrive in their respective artistic fields.
